WE MADE A HUGE CALCULATION BLUNDER. It's 3:15 am and Tim is 5 miles out. We're at headquarters. The officials just bellowed, "GET THE RED LANTERN!" and we're about to head out to the arch. YAHOOOOOOOOO!

  4. Congratulations Dr. Tim, Mary (as I know that this has been a huge family effort) and the dogs!!! I HAVE CHILLS!! I am so honored and privelaged to call Tim our vet! I can't wait to see him in person to congratulate him. What an accomplishment! Way to make all of us Yoopers (not to mention MQT) residents proud! Those dogs deserve some very high honors....maybe a spot in the bed ;)

  8. My son is a 5th grader at Creekside Elementary School in Durham, NC.
He was out of school for three weeks due to illness and to avoid falling behind he worked hard at home. One of his assignments was/is:

“Vasco should also be following one of the mushers in the Iditarod. I have links on the class website so he can track distance & time on a daily basis. It would be great if together, you could create a graph or some way to display the musher's daily progress. Maybe design something on the computer?”

The musher he chose is Dr. Tim Hunt and as a result he is the only student that has not turned in his report. Why? Because as long as “his” musher is running the race is not over and most of all he is learning that persevering, endurance and doing your best is more important than medals.

Thank you Dr. Tim. You are a great example to a 10 year old boy.

  9. This morning I asked Vasco (my 5th grader) why he chose Musher Tim Hunt, Bib # 64 (he told me I should not forget this detail), to be “his musher” and this is the answer I got:

Vasco: “He is a rookie. You know, it’s his first Iditarod as a musher but he participated before as a vet taking care of the dogs.”
Mom: “You chose him because he is a vet?”
Vasco: “And he knows how to take care of the dogs. Mom, that is really important, actually, that is more important than even wining the race!”
Mom: “You don’t mind that he did not finish in the top 10?”
Vasco: “No. It is better for him if he takes care of his dogs. They will do better next year and the dogs will be happy.”

The Iditarod Official Site has not updated its information and so we couldn’t find out for sure if Dr. Tim had reached Nome before the kids left for school. I just found out myself that he made it and am thrilled and humbled at the same time to have witnessed (via internet & Mary’s fabulous Blog) this great event.

    Congratulations and lots of rest.

  15. WOW!! FANTASTIC!! What an adventure! We've followed Tim from the start and were watching the finish. Tim's one determined musher. Our fuzzy Yooper hats are off to you Tim and those wonderful dogs, who I hope are napping on those sleep number beds Mary promised. We also were spying on you in White Mtn. via webcam, thought you were safe in the middle of nowhere,eh? NOT. Thanks to you Mary for entertaining us with your tales from the Trail, critiques of restaurants, and very descriptive narratives of the locals. We've laughed, cried, screamed, jumped for joy and exibited every Idit-emotion possible. Is this scratched off the TO DO list or can we look forward to 2010?

Safe trip home. We'll practice our "We're Not Worthy" bow.

  17. Mary...huge calculation error?? Haven't you been fired at least once for not being at the finish line?

This is so cool. Iditarod finisher! Huge snows, warm and frigid temps, blizzards, volcanos! all done along side a day job or two. Congrats. Have a safe trip home.

  19. Congrats to our Dr. Tim. He made even us Alaskan Lucias proud, because he was driving a great looking sled, a fabulous team of dogs, and he made it to Nome looking wonderfully fit himself! Mary, your blogs have been just the thing to keep this race very personal and very fun. I have to share what our media said today on the Iditarod Insider, which is a part of the website Iditarod.com. In the little sidebar of Tim's video-taped arrival to Nome, it said this: "...The rookie was awarded the Red Lantern for his tremendous feet and perseverance." I just about died laughing. I'm sure all of him is wonderful, but his feet are TREMENDOUS!!
Big smiles to you both and fond farewells; hope you get to see my sister Kim and hubbie Mark in Two Harbors on your return trip home. Perhaps we will get to follow you through another Iditarod soon!
